US Civil War Model 1840 Heavy Calvary Sword with Scabbard. The ricasso is marked with only a "W" or "M", maybe a Confederate maker mark?
No other markings on the sword or the scabbard. The grip and guard are tight, missing 10% of the leather wrap, and the twisted wire wrap is complete but loose. The blade is clean, has been sharpened, has a couple small dings on the blade edge, and has what looks like black paint splattered by the last 6 towards the tip. The scabbard is solid but does have a few dents-dings scattered throughout (the sword goes in-out tightly because of this), the top hanger ring is misshaped, the drag has a little rust around the edge and has an interesting hook edge on it, see the last picture. The leather washer is missing.
Length of the blade is 35 7/8" (1 3/16" wide and 3/8" thick), the sword is 41 3/8", and in the scabbard it is 42 7/8. Check out my other Civil War Items!
