UNITED CONFEDERATE VETERANS FROCK COAT WITH ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR ACCOUTREMENTS. This includes the double breasted UCV frock coat, silk sash, sword belt with original Confederate holster and cap pouch, and collar/tie. The following describes this complete ensemble.
Approximate size is 38 (US). This is a late 19th (1880s-90s) UCV frock coat.
The gray wool coat is in good condition with a number of match-head size moth nips mostly along the lower back skirt edge. The coat has undergone some museum-level professional repairs -- see photos showing small backing patches. These professional repairs not only back the moth nip holes, but also fill in the damage with a matching period shredded wool mixture that is virtually.
Other than these repairs, the frock coat seams are tight and there is no other weaknesses or external damage. The quilted/padded interior of the coat is shattered with about half of the interior remaining -- the padded chest is in good condition -- this does not effect the display quality of the coat (see photos). Elements of the internal back flap pockets remain. The internal silk sleeves are in excellent condition with a striped design. There are two internal breast pockets.Lieutenant's stripe is embroidered into each side of the collar (see photo). All brass South Carolina front, tail and cuff buttons are back-marked HORSTMANN BROS. (between to two dotted rings) -- these buttons began manufacture in the 1880's. The coat sleeves are 26 inches from the shoulder to the wrist, 8 inches wide at the elbow, and 5.5 inches at the cuff opening.
Very good condition original maroon Civil War era silk officer's sash measuring 116 x 3.5 inches. There are two small repaired pulls -- 1.0 and 1.5 inches, respectively. Otherwise, there is no further damage. The tassels are excellent shape with fading in a few spots, which is normal. Original Model 1850 Civil War bridal leather belt (this is not a reproduction) with a South Carolina interlocking two piece wreath brass buckle (see further description below). The two original sword slings with brass studs/buttons and matching shoulder strap are with the belt (see photos).
The belt is in very good condition and generally supple. Holster & Cap Pouch : Original Confederate holster and cap pouch (see photos). The holster is in very good condition. It has the traditional simple design for securing the flap with a tab that inserts into a slit cut into the holster body. The holster leather is supple and strong -- all seams are tight and the original plug is present. The back belt loop is hand sewn to the the holster -- no damage. The cap pouch/box also is in good condition. The main body is supple and strong -- the brass finial (not all Confederate pouches have lead or pewter finials) mounted towards the front is securely. This pouch has two hand sewn belt loops (and not all Confederate pouches have the single wide belt loop) attached. The belt loops are backed/reinforced with internal leather strips -- this is not observable with the pouch on the belt (or in general when off the belt) nor diminish the item. Both the holster and pouch show only normal wear. Buckle : A brass South Carolina two piece wreath buckle.
I believe this buckle is a post-war recast that was mounted on the original belt for the veteran -- maybe it was his wartime belt. The buckle overall is worn smooth in areas and appears to have been cleaned numerous times -- it is not an aged modern reproduction. The back of the spoon side of the buckle has some old, now worn, pitting and a few knocks from interlocking to the wreath. The wreath side of buckle is sewn to the belt.
The sewing work is quite old and correct style to the 19thC period. The belt buckle is unmarked. These are for show only. The collar is late 19thC and the tie is a reenactment reproduction item. This is a serious collector's ensemble and certainly will be the centerpiece of any Civil War collection display.
