Part 1 was published in 1964 and Part II in 1965, by the Civil War Centennial Commission in Nashville, Tennessee.

Part 1 contains the unit histories of regiments, separate battalions and separate batteries or companies. Part II is an alphabetic roster of all personnel on whom records are available from any source.

Both Confederate and Federal personnel are included. These Volumes are rosters of Confederate and of Federal personnel who served in Tennessee Organizations or organizations of a Tennessee connotation during the Civil War. The entry for each individual normally shows the last name, first name, and middle initial of the individual, followed by the highest rank on record, the company and regiment or organization in which he served. This is an outstanding resource for anyone studying Tennessee in the Civil War or trying to find the unit of an ancestor or Civil War veteran.
