The book focuses on the historical and soldier service records of soldiers in the First Regiment, South Carolina (Regulars); the First (Greggs) Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers; and the First (Hagoods) Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers. The First Regiment, South Carolina (Regulars) was trained as both infantry and as artillery and served in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
It took an active part in many conflicts in and around Charleston, including at Morris Island. If also fought in the North Carolina campaign. The book provides a history sketch of the unit including a sketch of its commanders, field and staff, and of its subordinate companies A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, and K. The First (Greggs) Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers moved from Charleston to northern Virginia in time for the first Battle of Manassas and thereafter fought in all the major campaigns in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The First (Hagoods) Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers entered Confederate service in December 1860 and served in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, then moved to Virginia. It fought at South Mountain, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg, and later served under General Longstreet at Suffolk and under D. It served again with Longstreet during the Knoxville operations and at the Battles of The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, during the Petersburg siege, and during the Appomattox Campaign.
