This undated telegram message, written on a form of the Southern Telegraph Companies, was likely written in 1862 while George W. Randolph served as Confederate Secretary of War.
The other troops & Reg be filled up with Conscripts. All over thirty-five will be discharged in ninety days. Randolph had been appointed Secretary of War by Confederate President Jefferson Davis on March 18, 1862.
He is known for having introduced reforms to the department that aided in securing supplies and conscripting new recruits. He and Davis didn't always see eye to eye, however, and citing illness Randolph resigned November 17, 1862. The telegram is in excellent condition with light toning and creases at the original folds. The writing is quite faint, but legible. The telegram measures about 8 3/8" x 5 1/2".Please see my other items for more interesting Civil War letters, documents, and images.
