Rare Civil War Confederate 1st Mississippi Rangers Cavalry Muster Roll Document

This is a very rare Confederate muster roll from 1863, documenting Cavalry troops belonging to Col. William Faulkner of Ripley, Mississippi.

The First Mississippi Partisan Rangers, Falkner's Regiment were formed to provide protection to border regions of Mississippi and Tennessee. Although fully a part of the Confederate cavalry, they operated as a renegade guerilla force while supplementing other Confederate regiments as needed. The regiment was made up mostly of men from Alcorn and Tishomingo Counties in Mississippi. In their early history, they protected the Memphis and Charleston railroad from Memphis to Iuka, and participated in battles at Corinth, Hatchie Bridge and Iuka.

Later, they were dispatched to Ripley, Tupelo, Booneville, and fought with Forrest at Bryce Crossroads, and Rienzi. By 1864 they were disbanded and sent to the 7th Cavalry Regiment under Forrest. This is a very rare and fragile document completed by Captain W. Stansell in 1863, just before Faulkner resigned. Of course Faulkner is a unique historic character with his own flaws and controversies.

He is best known for as the great grandfather of the famed Mississippi author William Faulkner, whose early works were modeled after his great grandfather. This is a very rare and desirable document that needs to be kept in a great collection - don't miss it!
