Rare c. 1887 Cherokee Nation Council Photograph & Civil War Confederate History

For your consideration is a historically important and rare c. 1887 photograph of the 17th Cherokee Nation Tribal Council. The following background and provenance of the photograph was provided to me by the family member of the gentlemen seated in the first row center with a circle drawn around his head and his leg crossed to the right. His name is Daniel Webster Vann and he was the great-grandfather of the person providing this information.

He was also the grandson of Cherokee Chiefs James Clement Vann and his son Chief "Rich Joe" Vann of Spring Place, Georgia (near the town of Chatsworth).... Most of the men are either wearing their traditional flat hats or holding them in their laps....

You can see one tribal member seated inside looking out from a lovely arched window. The gentleman seated in the front row, third from the left is Downing Party Chief, Joel Bryan Mayes. Today, the Chief Vann House is a state-owned and run historical site. The tribal leaders are seated according to importance in front and standing behind in rows with the original red brick Cherokee Nation Court House as a backdrop.

The Cherokee Nation Court House, which still stands in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, was one of the first permanent buildings in the Cherokee Nation. The Cherokee people were forcibly removed from the East Coast (Georgia) to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in the early 1800's. In what has become known as the Trail of Tears. " Many of the men in this photograph served the Confederate Army during the Civil War in the famous "All- Cherokee Regiment under General Stand Watie. Daniel Webster Vann, front row center, was elected a member of the tribal council from the Cooweesccoowee District by the Downing Party in 1887 and served for 10 years.

He served in the C. (Confederate Army), in James Bell's Company. Enlisting at the age of 16 years old in the Fall of 1861. Like many of the men in this photograph, he took part in the Battles of Pea Ridge, Newtonia, Cabin Creek, and many others throughout Indian Territory, which then included part of what is today Arkansas and Oklahoma. Many of the Cherokee men in the photograph also were members of the Anti-Horse Thief Association, an organization that, according to old Cherokee Nation newspaper articles, did much to discourage larceny in Indian Territory, and made horse stealing not only unpopular, but decidedly dangerous.

Daniel Webster Vann was a pioneer member of the association, president of the local association for four years, and served one term as vice-president of the'Indian Territory Division. He was a member of no church, but built Vann's Chapel near his farm.

He also built a school house for Indian children a short distance from his home. It was later named Osage School.

There are additional family names and more historical context provided in her document. The photograph has been trimmed along the left and right sides and has a few pin holes along the mount in the top center, and bottom left. The gentleman seated in the center has a circle around his head in pen. However, the photograph is quite rare and rich in historical context and none of these flaws seem important. I will be happy to respond as quickly as I can..... Many of these images and documents have not seen another collectors hands in many years.
