Raphael Semmes [1809 1877] was an admiral in the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War who previously served in the United States Navy from 1826 until the outbreak of the Civil War. During the American Civil War, Captain Semmes commanded the cruiser CSS Alabama, the most successful commerce raider in maritime history, taking 65 prizes. Semmes commanded the Alabama against the USS Kearsarge during one of the most famous naval engagements of the Civil War which took place outside the port in Cherbourg, France. Later in the war he was promoted to rear admiral. The display is centered around two period carte-de-visite photo cards, one of the admiral and the other is the CSS Alabama.

The cards measure 4.00 x 2.50 inches, in fine condition and are quite rare themselves. The autograph is signed on a card,''R.

On June 19, 1864, Captain Semmes while commanding the Alabama, engaged in one of the most famous naval engagements of the Civil War against the USS Kearsarge outside the port of Cherbourg, France''.
