Narrative of Military Operations directed During the late War Between the States, by Joseph E. Appleton & Company, New York, 1874, 602 pages, 6 1/2 by 9 1/4 inches. This is a Civil war memoir by Confederate general Joseph E. He was in the Battle of Manassas, the Peninsula Campaign, where he was wounded, the Atlanta Campaign against Sherman and in the Carolinas Campaign near the war's end. He was often at odds with Confederate president Jefferson Davis both over his rank and battle tactics.

He was, however, respected as a general by opposing Union generals Sherman and Grant, and both became his friends after the war. The book includes a fold out map of the Peninsula, some battle maps and portrait engravings of both Confederate and Union generals. The book and the appendix include a number of letters and documents. There's some wear on the edges of the cover, especially on the top and bottom f the spine, but the gilt decoration is still bright.

The pages are lightly toned and the owner's book plate and names are in the font. The tissue guards are still in place in front of the illustrations.
