This is an ink-signed CDV of Confederate Navy Acting Masters Mate John M. Battle, who served on board the CSS Selma according to muster roles. The boat was captured by U.
Navy steamer USS Metacoment during the Battle of Mobile Bay, and was recommissioned as USS Selma. Battle is seen in civilian attire, and the back mark bears the name of New Orleans La.
