Offered is an original, historic, & collectible old newspaper: DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Richmond, Virginia, July 6, 1863 Historic Battle of Gettysburg From the Confederate perspective Not only is this a nice newspaper from the Confederacy, but it is from the Confederate capital. Although the front page has much reporting on the Civil War, certainly the most significant content in this issue is the rather lengthy & detailed reporting on the first two days of the Battle of Gettysburg found on the back page.

The reports are headed: "Latest News From The North" "A Great Battle At Gettysburg--The Fight Probably To Be Renewed--Movements and Operations In Pennsylvania And Maryland--An Attack Expected At Harrisburg--Levies Made On the Citizens of Pennsylvania--Our Cavalry Penetrate Within A Few Miles of Washington". There a few prefacing comment noting that through the flag of truce boat several northern newspapers arrived with news of the battle, beginning.

The news from the North is of a serious and important character. The movements of our army in Pennsylvania had culminated in a great and sanguinary battle at (Getty)sburg, a considerable town in Pennsylvania, some 25 miles east of Chambersburg...

Between two old armies--Lee's and Hooker's, General Meade who succeeds Hooker... There is some detailed reporting on the battle of Wednesday (July 1) as shown in the photos, and further on are comments of the battle on Thursday (July 2). Under the heading: "Another Account" there are more detailed reports of the fighting including some comments from Thursday (July 3). The reporting is excellent and quite detailed; too much to mention here, so the photos are extensive.

There are several related reports as well, with subheads; "Removal Of Hooker--His Farewell Address" which begins.'Fighting Joe Hooker' has shared the fate of his predecessors, and has been relieved of his command... And which includes his General Order signed by him: Joseph Hooker", plus "The Latest From Vicksburg" "Yankeeism In Baltimore" "The Forces Reported Near Washington" "Movements Of Our Army In Pennsylvania--Our Forces In Occupation of York--Affairs in Front of Harrisburg--A Battle Expected Hourly--Rumors, Speculations and more.

As if all this was not sufficient, the back page also has a lengthy editorial which comments on events surrounding Gettysburg, including. The whole horizon is full of movement. The war approaches its crisis.

All other interests are swallowed up by that grand battle fought and fighting in the heart of Pennsylvania. Complete as a single sheet newspaper. A bit close-trimmed at the bottom portion of the right margin of the back page, affecting only a few ads; none of the text. Otherwise in very nice, clean condition.
