This is a Confederate Foot Artillery sword (gladius) from the middle or later part of the Civil War. This sword was a copy of the US Army's Model 1832 Foot Artillery sword. The hilt guard and pommel were cast in brass in one piece and nickel plated, the blade is forged steel, and the scabbard is wood with brass mounts and carries an unusual face decorated guard reinforcement as part of the point mount. The sword was made in a small armory and is typical in being unmarked or a little lacking in artistic refinements given the contingencies of war, especially later in the conflict.
The blade is 18" long; overall length is 23 1/2". The hilt is heavily worn and shows good battle use thereby and by Golly if there isn't stained blood on the lower hilt!
