A nice original example of a Confederate made saber. A French Napoleonic war style, this type of saber was made for Horse Drawn Artillery Units. A hearty 37" long, withand overly curved 31 1/2" blade, with an almost crude and minimal brass guard embellished by one pinstripe. Note the crazy over done curve. Unmarked, - no inspectors marks either, and fuller is unstopped.
Handle retains original leather wrap. Wire is missing, but a small piece of double strand remains. Guard is slightly loose - it will disjoint. Sword has original old patina. One old nick on the cutting strike. The blade is solid, no cracks, no red rust or pitting, browned from age. Found in a New England outdoor antique market. Good honest piece, typical small shop construction and details. Priced to sell- I think you will like this one. Not to be mistaken with the later 1872 US Army Regulation Sabers that are similar in look, less curved than this one- but the 1872 issues are far better made, and marked. The Confederate shops copied the popular French styles, not only in swords, but nearly every aspect of uniforms. This is a very unique and rare type of field service blade. I like the stuff that has a story to tell if it could. The item "Confederate Light Artillery Saber Sword Old Salty Example Civil War Antique" is in sale since Friday, December 09, 2016.
