Confederate General Orders From the Adjutant & Inspector General-1864-1st Editio
General Orders from the Adjutant and Inspector-General's Office, Confederate States Army. Prepared from Files of Head-Quarters, Department of South Carolina.

Gilchrist, Acting Judge Advocate General, with Full Index. Explanatory Notes and Such Decisions of the War Department As Could Be Collected Touching Matters of General Concern to the Service. Published in 1864 by Evans and Cogswell.

It is number 2426 on the Parrish and Willingham bibliography of Confederate Imprints. This copy is the original first edition of this rare Civil War document. It is NOT a reprint. It was formerly in the collection of The Library of The Military Service Institution of the. The Military Service Institution was a voluntary organization of officers of the Army for mutual improvement, fostered by Generals Sherman and Sheridan while they commanded the Army, and presided over by the senior major-generals.

It was for many years the constant means of widespread increase in the most advanced studies of the Science and Art of War. Its library contained over 10,00 volumes. The institution did not long survive its founders, becoming defunct by the end of World War I. The publication is known to have originally issued with a paper cover. At some point, this copy was bound into khaki cloth covers, minus its original cover. The title "Confederate General Orders 1864" is in gilt lettering on a leather strip on the spine.

The volume measures 4.75" x 7.5". Images are of this copy.

The cloth covers are very good, with only small bits of edge and corner wear, and a few spots / scuffs on the cover faces. The gilt on the spine label is bright and complete.

The binding is sturdy, tight and undamaged. Someone wrote "C1345" in pencil on the upper front cover corner, on the front free endpaper and on the title page. The title page also has the oval stamp of the Military Service Insitute Library and the Library's Class / Shelf Index stamp and written number. BA23C is also in pencil on the title page (see image of title page).

Pages are browned around the edges and have foxing, or possibly brown stains - significant on some pages, much less on others. See images for the range - only about half a dozen pages have the worst staining. The last, blank, page has a 3/4 horizontal tear. One page has a 1" x 1.5" triangular piece missing from the upper corner, apparently where the page was dog-eared. The closed page edges are quite browned.
