Confederate General Hylan B. Lyon & Simon B. Buckner Civil War Date Signed
Lyon was a hard fighting General during the war in the west. His signature is quite scarce, this being only the second one that I've seen in years.
Buckner was also a very good General for the Confederacy in the South. This requisition document dates to January 25th 1862 and is signed by Confederate Brigadier General Simon Bolivar Buckner & future Brigadier General Hylan B. It is also signed by Captain Thomas K. Porter, who commanded Porter's Battery. A little over two weeks later, all three officers would be taking part in the Battle of Fort Donelson, which ended in a Confederate surrender to U.
Between this document being signed and the battle, Lyon switched from the artillery branch to infantry, commanding a regiment during the battle. Captain Porter would be wounded during this battle also. Buckner would eventually be promoted to Major General and had a very respectable wartime record. The rest of Lyon's career was quite colorful.He would bounce around commanding Calvary, Infantry, and Artillery. He found a lot of success as a Calvary Commander, serving a period of time under General Nathan Bedford Forest. In January 1865, Lyon was surprised while sleeping in a private home in Red Hill, Alabama, by a detachment of the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry. After he was captured, he shot and killed the Union sergeant who captured him, Arthur Lyon (no apparent relation), by asking to retrieve his clothes and grabbing a hidden pistol, then escaped in his nightgown.
