An original Civil War Certificate of Discharge for Private Alexander Stewart, 7th Tennessee, age 45 for "Seniority", having served one year. The Certificate is issued at Orange Court House, Virginia, Aug 19, 1862 The Certificate is signed by Captain AD Norris, Company Commander and twice by Major Samuel G Shepard commanding the 7th Tennessee, and approved and signed on the reverse by Lt Colonel Robert Archer, by command of General Archer. Lt Colonel Robert Harris Archer, of Hartford County, Maryland was the aide of his brother General James J Archer and served w the 55th Virginia. During the Battle of Gettysburg the 2 brothers fought together and were captured: paroled after a time at Johnson's Island Robert served until the War's End. 2pp 8 x 13 ink on lined paper.
