Civil War Officer's Lap Desk. This is a very attractive Civil War Period Officer's Lap desk. At one point, someone set what appears to be a hot cup of coffee (probably right off of a camp fire) on the far top right of the case, leaving a circular outline in the finish. There are also a couple of slivers of wood on either side that have started to separate due to the age of the wood, but they are still present, and could probably be repaired fairly easily. Brass plate on top has been lost to time.
Brass fittings, hinges, lock plate, etc. All display an attractive original antique patina. Two small internal compartments for writing utensils and ink are topped with the original, ivory handled covers, one housing a packet of solid "Concentrated Ink" from the period, which is a nice addition. The internal leaves used as writing surfaces are no longer present, but this is an easy fix. The key is no longer present, but again, this could be easily remedied.
The bottom piece of wood on the case has dried, shrunk, and show separation (please see photos). Dimensions are 18" x 10" x 5 when closed. Overall a very attractive Civil War lap desk, that would make a great addition to any collection/display.Please review all photos thoroughly and ask questions.
