CIVIL War North Carolina Confederate Gettysburg Veteran Cross Of Honor
The 16th North Carolina Volunteers served the entire War incl heavy during the Gettysburg Campaign where 1/3 of the men were wounded/killed or captured. An Original Civil War Confederate veteran Cross of Honor Certificate for Private John A Blain of Macon County, who served faithfully from 1861 including the Battle of Gettysburg. Following the Battle he was captured during Lee's retreat at Falling Waters Maryland, July 14, 1863. An Original Civil War Confederate Veteran Cross of Honor Application Certificate for Private Blain, listing his service incl capture and imprisonment at Fort Delaware until the End of the War. The 1p 8 x 11 ptd/ink Southern Cross of Honor certificate is signed by the Private Oct 1, 1901 and endorsed & signed by his Old North State comrades incl Charles Luther & Wm McDowell of his unit, also by UCV Commanders NP Rankin & WA Curtis. Comes w service info incl battles of the 16th NC and Private Blain's capture during the retreat from Gettysburg, time in a variety of POW camps incl Old Capitol Prison, Point Lookout, Fort Delaware, Hilton Head, Fort Pulaski, Georgia and the notorious Johnson's Island, Ohio camp. His final POW imprisonment was again at Fort Delaware Maryland, which he survived until paroled June, 1865. Green paper with minor edge wear, age stains, Overall VG.
