CIVIL WAR MODEL 1840 CAVALRY SWORD WITH CONFEDERATE ETCHING ON BLADE MADE BY SOLINGEN. THESE SWORD WERE USED BY BOTH CONFEDERATE AND UNION, AND MOST OF THEM CAME OUT OF VIRGINIA. I BELIEVE THE ETCHING WAS PROBABLY DONE AFTER THE WAR. STILL SHARP TOWARD THE LOWER PORTION OF THE SWORD. THIS ONE DEFINATELY SAW BATTLE ACTION.
THIS IS A VERY NICE CIVIL WAR SWORD WITH MOST LIKELY POST WAR ETCHING, PRICED ACCORDINGLY. A very nice Kirschbaum, K &C Cavalry Saber & Scabbard with Confederate etching on the blade including a Confederate battle... The letters CS, and the Confederate motto Deo Vindice.
(God Protects or Vindicates Us). This is an enlisted saber with plain mounts, and the grip is wood from which the leather and wire are missing. The blade is a standard Solingen made one, with etching added. The etching includes the specifics mentioned above, along with vines and leaves, and cross-hatching, as well as a Confederate shield with a pole topped by a Liberty Cap. The scabbard is all steel with a single screw holding the throat.
Dimensions: The sword is 42.75 inches long overall. The blade is 36 inches long. Cavalry saber, Model 1840, Kirschbaum, K & C in oval of dots. The model 1840 saber, called the wrist breaker, was was a relatively heavy cavalry saber, and as it was manufactured before the Civil War, it saw extensive use by both sides during the war.
