Historic Louisville, Kentucky was HQ for the Union Army in Kentucky. Despite Confederate assaults in 1862 and 1863 it remained in Union occupation and served as training and staging camps for volunteers, military hospitals, supply depots and the Confederate POW military prison. An Original Civil War Union Army Pass issued at "Head-Quarters District of Western Kentucky, Louisville" and dated October 16, 1863 allowing the bearer, Chaplain N.
N Burche, Hospital Chaplain" to pass from Louisville to "Mil Pris (Military Prison) at will. The Pass issued by Order of Brigadier General Boyle is ink signed by Stephen Jones as the General's ADC. Comes w service info for `native Kentuckian General Jeremiah Boyle, and for the pass signer Captain Stephen E Jones, 2nd Kentucky Volunteers who served as Commander of the Louisville Military Prison for Confederate Prisoners of War in 1863.
