CIVIL War Georgia Confederate Surgeon Letter From Wife With Cover 1863


Doctor Erwin J Eldridge of Starkville Georgia served as Assistant Surgeon, Howell Cobb's 16th Georgia Volunteers and eventually as Chief Surgeon of the Georgia Reserve at Macon. An Original Civil War Letter from his wife Emma at Americus, Sumter County, Georgia, Sept 5th, 1861 to "My own darling and much loved Erv"- she writes that a dispute with a lady has worsened because you refused to take her hand at the Americus Depot, The lady writes she is in rapture at the long letter he wrote, Did you receive your trunk? , a dispute about his sword, the fund raising "tableaux" with the ladies, death of his artillery friend he met at Manassas, fears for his safety, names various ladies enroute to join their husbands in Virginia, her loneliness at his long absence, her pride that he is aa army surgeon, mentions Colonel Bryant is to visit, discusses the supplies sent with him in his carpet bag, and that she is knitting him socks as are all the ladies here. Emma names various friends visiting and finishes "Your loving Emma". The letter comes with it's original postal cover, w age stains, and an Americus Ga. " postmark, addressed as "Private" to " Dr E. Howell Cobb's 16th Georgia Regiment- Richmond, Virginia. A nice newsy 7 pages 8 x 10 ink with minor age spots, folds, Overall VG. Comes with service info & bio for Surgeon Eldridge.
