Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Siege of Petersburg. "A former cadet of the Virginia Military Institute, Taylor served as adjutant to Lee throughout the war, giving him an exceptional position from which to view many activities" (Eicher 323). Was one of the first Southern writers to use the Confederate archives. From these documents and his personal knowledge, he was able to write the authorative.
