Major John Warwick Daniel, of Lynchburg, Virginia served with the 11th Virginia and 27th Virginia, was wounded at First Manassas, then served on General Jubal Early's staff and is remembered for his able services at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and especially at the Battle of Spottsylvania. An Original 1898 letter from Major Daniels at Washington, DC, to family friend Captain Charles Ayres, wishing him well. Major Daniels served on General Jubal Early's staff, & was severely wounded, a ball shattering his femur, while assisting General Gordon's command in the repulse of the Union Assault in the Wilderness, Virginia May 7, 1864. At General Early's funeral, Major Daniel eulogized the General " Virginia holds the dust of many a faithful son, but not of one whom loved her more, who fought for her better, or would have died for her more willingly".
