See my other auctions for more great historic items! MARTINGALE HEART from horse harness tack?
Or Heart Rosette BREASTPLATE from cartridge pouch shoulder belt? Lead-filled Brass Buckle Dug Relic Gettysburg? Offered is an authentic RARE original Civil War period. Round brass 3-D relief Martingale (horse tack) OR shoulder belt breastplate buckle measuring approximately 2 1/4 diameter (inches).Has quite a heavy feel to it. Back side is old patinated lead filled, still with the two original 90 degree metal prongs, rusted but still intact & sturdy.
Brass front has wonderful as-found deep rich unpolished original dark patina. Small break in brass at upper right rim edge (really does not detract much). This piece has an overall intact & complete look & feel to it. Research shows that it is more likely to be Confederate than Union.... Though it could be either, as both sides used the Heart emblem for various types of buckles & rosettes.
I can guarantee this is not a reproduction. Beyond that, I can share the only verbal provenance that I have is the prior owner told me his old friend had a small (now long-closed) museum in Gettysburg, PA around 1980. Apparently the original owner searched for dug artifacts around the Gettysburg Battlefields & this item came from him & was displayed in his little museum. Hard to find the old Union & Confederate originals.
Very nice condition for a dug relic! I have more Civil War Militaria, fine vintage jewelry, porcelain, glassware, & antique cut glass listed! Please see attached pics & make all inquiries prior to purchasing. The item "CIVIL WAR Confederate MARTINGALE HEART or BREASTPLATE Brass Buckle Gettysburg" is in sale since Wednesday, May 31, 2017.
