Sergeant Andrew Brooke Cawthorn, of New Prospect, VA, served 4 years with the 26th Virginia, was captured in heavy fighting June 15, 1864 along with many of his comrades in the famous battle to protect the city in the from the firsst Assault on the Petersburg Line. An Original Confederate Cross of Honor Certificate for Fidelia Haggerty for her Father, Andrew B Cawthorn stating his War service- a native of King and Green County, Va, it notes he enlisted in 1861 as a sergeant, 26th Virginia, was taken prisoner of war and discharged with rank of lieutenant June, 1865. Pen certificate his signed by UCV Camp Lee comrades W. Nunn, 5th Va Cavalry and by AG Ware, 24th Virginia at Richmond, June 28, 1912. The Certificate has an ink inscription on the left edge- "The 600 prisoners taken to retaliate on the supposed bad treatment to the federal officers at Andersonville, Ga". (referring to Sec of War Stanton's order issued in retaliation for the mistreatment of Union officer POWs, to treat the Confederate officers as the Union POWs had been treated). Lt Cawthorn was one of the 600, imprisoned at Fort Pulaski, and Fort Delaware. The margin notation is trimmed. The certificate has age stains, edge wear, and Overall VG condition.
