With this unit he fought at the second Battle of Manassas and Antietam. He fought at Fredericksburg and was wounded at Marye's Heights in the Battle of Chancellorsville. While he was recovering, Isaac Avery took command of the unit. 1864, resuming his competent field command, especially repulsing Union forces that threatened Richmond and Petersburg. He served with distinction at Cold Harbor and other battles before moving to North Carolina.
