CIVIL War Confederate General James G Martin Signed Document 1856



James Green Martin, a native of North Carolina served with the US Army on the Western Frontier before the War. He was nicknamed "Old One Wing" by his men, having lost an arm in combat in the Mexican War. In 1861 he resigned his Army commission and was appointed major of cavalry in the North Carolina forces, a brigadier general in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States in 186. And commanded troops in battle at New Bern. NC, and at Petersburg, Virginia, repulsing the Federal troops assault on the city lines May, 1864 and then at the Battle of Cold Harbor. General Martin was cited for his contribution to the Confederacy by General Lee. He finished the War in command at Asheville, NC and is buried there.
