The diorama shows a caravan transporting a ten inch seacoast mortar from coastal South Carolina to Petersburg, Virginia to help in the defense of Richmond against dug-in Union forces. The limber, horses, wheels, and the soldier are commercial products. Every thing else is scratch built.
The wagon contains the mortar, twelve 41-pound cased shot with fuses in special boxes, sponge and rammer rods, block and tackle to hoist the mortar from the wagon, and a sponge bucket. The diorama is 1 to 16 scale.
Buckets of lubricant for wooden axle bearings hang from the limber and wagon. The horses are Bryer Collect A, a mare and a stallion. The base for the diorama represents a South Carolina red clay road.
