Civil War Confederate Army 1862 First Edition Stevenson Shiloh Rebel Memoir
Thirteen Months in the Rebel Army: Being a Narrative of Personal Adventures in the Infantry, Ordnance, Cavalry, Courier, and Hospital Services; with an Exhibition of the Power, Purposes, Earnestness, Military Despotism, and Demoralization of the South. Stevenson, originally published anonymously as An Impressed New Yorker. An unusually immediate Civil War memoir published while the war was still raging, recounting William G. Stevenson's experiences inside the Confederate Army. Stevenson, a New Yorker caught in the South, entered Confederate service and subsequently served in a remarkable succession of capacities- infantry, ordnance, cavalry, courier, and hospital service -before escaping to Union lines. The narrative includes firsthand material concerning Fort Pillow, Columbus and Bowling Green, Kentucky, Nashville, Richmond, Chattanooga, the Battle of Belmont, and the Battle of Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing), as well as encounters with Confederate military figures. Contemporary promotional material emphasized the unusual intelligence Stevenson could provide about the Confederate military from the inside. Illustrated with the engraved frontispiece Council of War Before the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. The bibliographical record confirms the New York A. Barnes & Burr 1862 edition and 232-page collation. This copy has particularly interesting institutional provenance. The front pastedown bears labels from A. Cassel's Library, Harleysville, Pennsylvania, and Juniata College Library, identifying it as a gift from M.
The title page also bears an old institutional stamp, and the spine carries an old call number. Original blind-stamped publisher's cloth. Ex-library, with multiple early library labels on front pastedown, institutional stamp on title page, and painted call number on spine. Binding shows substantial age and use, including rubbing, wear and losses at spine ends and corners, exposed board at corners, fraying, and wear along joints.
Interior shows scattered spotting, toning and other signs of age and institutional use. Frontispiece and title page present.
Please examine photographs closely for condition. A genuinely interesting 1862 Confederate-service narrative, desirable for its combination of firsthand Civil War content, Shiloh association, contemporary publication date, and documented institutional provenance.
