CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE 2ND MODEL RARE VIRGINIA MANUFACTORY VIRGINIA CAVALRY SABER SWORD MARKED WITH THE N 5 ON RICASSO AND WHAT APPEARS TO BE A V ON OTHER SIDE. FULL LENGHT BLADE NOT CUT DOWN. SOME OF THESE SWORD WERE CUT DOWN THIS ONE WAS NOT. MEASURES 44 1/2 INCHES WITH A 40 INCH BLADE. This is a scarce and very desirable example of a. Confederate 2ND Model Virginia Manufactory Cavalry Saber. The iron birds head hilt has the usual half-basket sheet iron guard, which is perforated with 7 slots in its face, arranged in two rows, four on the outer edge and three on the interior.
The sword knot slot remains in place at the rear of the knuckle guard as well. The guard extends 2 inches above the spine of the saber, with a gently forward swept quillon that terminates in a slightly birds head shaped flat quillon.
The original leather grip is 70% intact and the 7-groove wood grip has a nice patina. The blade is marked 2 and an X.And has a few nicks on the blade battle related. I have another shorter one listed see photo N3 shown in the photo only for comparison in size.
