Battle of Sabine Confederate Prison Camp Civil War Diary Manuscript Transcript
This is an amazing historical account of a soldier's capture and imprisonment in a Confederate Prisoner of War camp in Texas during the Civil War. Including 19 pages, the diary was originally written by Stephen Wright, a Union soldier in the New York 75th Infantry Company B. Wright was involved in the Battle of Sabine Pass II, September 8, 1863.

The union campaign for this battle was meant to reduce Fort Griffin and to have the landing troops begin to occupy Confederate Texas. It was the intention of the Union army to surprise the Confederates, but their cover was blown and the enemy had time to ready the troops and to put cannon operators in position. With only about 44 men, the Confederates were able to force the Union flotilla to retire and captured the gunboat Clifton and about 200 prisoners. Private Wright was one of those captured men. Wright enlisted at the age of 20 on September 20, 1861, at Victory, NY.

He was to serve three years. According to information found in the "Annual Report of the Adjutant-General of the State of New York", Wright was captured on September 8th, but there is no date for his parole. He mustered out in Auburn, NY on November 25, 1864. To the Register of the 75th Infantry. In overall very good condition with toning, folds, foxing, and small tears.

Unfortunately, the first page is lost to the ages. This condition is consistent with age and use.

The hand-written pages are each about 12 1/2" x 8". This primary account of the Civil War will make fascinating read, and wonderful addition to your archives or collection.
