Up for sale is a 1961 restrike of the 1861 Confederate Cent, made from the original dies. Description : It is made from bronze (copper), and measures approximately 19mm in diameter. It has been graded at MS67 RD by NGC.
These restrikes were made by Robert Bashlow in 1961, who used the original (defaced) 1861 dies made by engraver Robert Lovett. Lovett was afraid he would be charged with treason for aiding the Confederacy and so he cancelled the dies. The hammer blows and chisel marks he made are clearly visible.After minting the 1961 restrikes, the dies were donated to the Smithsonian. Condition : Bright red lustrous surfaces.
