This is an extremely rare and early tintype of a engineer officer, seated with his model 1850 sword in his lap. The Hardee hat has the engineers castle with plume. The buttons appear to be the flat engineers buttons, but hard to tell. The belt buckle is a Virginia buckle with the indian standing.

The case has a patriotic eagle , with flag in it's beak and 33 stars around the edge. At the beginning of the Civil War , till 1863 there were only forty six engineers all graduates as required from WEST POINT , the confederate started with only seven engineers.

This engineer I'm sure the engineering officer, could be id with some work, due to the small amount of WEST POINT grads.
