AMERICAN MEXICAN WAR CIVIL WAR HORSTMANN & SONS PHYLADELPHIA. CONFEDERATE CARRIED HIGH OFFICER SWORD CA 1845-50. MEASURES 37 3/4 WITH A 32 INCH BLADE. VERY RARE IN THIS CONDITION.
CAME OUT OF A TEXAS ESTATE AND ACCORDING TO THE ORAL HISTORY CONFEDERATE OFFICER CARRIED THIS SWORD. A very handsome helmet pommel militia officer's sword with richly etched blade. Roughly 35 inches overall length. Grip is excellent condition carved fluted bone. Gilt brass scabbard is excellent with no dents.
Blade is excellent gun metal gray patina with a richly etched surface signed HORSTMANN & SONS PHILADELPHIA, and bearing military and floral motifs. Circa 1845- 1850 this sword is typical of those carried in the war with Mexico, and also carried by Confederate officers early in the Civil War.
