Originally published in 1861, J. Julian Chisolm, the foremost surgeon in the Confederacy, wrote A Manual of Military Surgery for Use of Surgeons in the Confederate Army to aid in the treatment and conduct of surgical procedures during the Civil War by other Confederate surgeons. In this great book Dr. Chisolm details the surgical procedures used during the Civil War and also incorporates treatment of other medical aspects as well. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he received his medical degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1850 and continued his studies in London, Milan and Paris. During the Crimean War, Chisolm studied treatment techniques in European military hospitals. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, he received the first Confederate Military Commission issued to a medical officer and attended the wounded at Fort Sumter. His Manual of Military Surgery (1861) was presented to the surgeon-general while the Battle of Manassas was fought. In addition to his extraordinary service to the Confederacy, Dr. Chisolm holds the distinction of having treated Helen Kellers in 1886, confirming that she would never see or hear, but being convinced, despite conventional wisdom at the time, that she could be educated and thus referring her to Alexander Graham Bell who secured teaching services for her.
