Original 1880 first edition of Advance and Retreat: Personal Experiences in the United States and Confederate States Armies by J. Hood, Lieutenant-General in the Confederate Army. Published in New Orleans for the Hood Orphan Memorial Fund by G. This antique Civil War memoir is bound in black pebbled leather with decorative blind-stamped borders, raised spine bands, gilt spine lettering and marbled endpapers.

The signature reproduced beneath the portrait is a printed facsimile and is not represented as an original autograph.

The leather binding shows age-related rubbing, edge and corner wear and wear at the spine extremities. Interior pages show toning and foxing, particularly around the portrait and preliminary pages. The folding map shown is present and displays well. A desirable original Civil War memoir with strong John Bell Hood and New Orleans historical interest.
