1864 HOLY BIBLE Pocket AMERICAN Leather ANTIQUE Testament CIVIL WAR Confederate
The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. London: G E Eyre & W Spottiswoode, for the British & Foreign Bible Society, 1864. Rare pocket sized plain leatherbound pocket Bible, dated during the American Civil War era in 1864. This was printed by the British and Foreign Bible Society of England; interestingly they were one of the suppliers of pocket Bibles and Testaments for Confederate soldiers to carry during the Civil War, and many found with Confederate associations are in this exact binding style, including the'WATKINS BINDER' ticket found on the lower corner of the rear pastedown. Specimen in good shape, bound in plain tan leather with pleasant patina, the spine with some light damage along the upper joint and spine edge, the front board nearly detached as a result.
Hinges intact in rear, otherwise very strong binding. Main block slightly browned and foxed, as shown, but easily read and all intact. Measures 4.5" x 3".
