Shown is an original & historic old newspaper, offered to enhance your collectible interest: WEEKLY STANDARD, Raleigh, North Carolina, October 7, 1863 Battle of Gettysburg Robert E. Lee's official report Certainly one of the less common titles from the Confederate States. The front page has a terrific letter by the editor, William Holden, expressing his frustration with the destruction caused to his business by troops from Georgia on September 9.

This letter takes nearly 3 1/2 columns or over half of the front page. This is part of a much bigger story concerning Holden and his editorial comments on the Civil War. See the hyperlink for much more on the "Weekly Standard", his views on the Civil War, and details of the destruction of his print shop. There are other related front page articles concerning his shop's destruction. Also: "The Situation" which begins.

Since our last issue a great battle has been fought between the forces of Gen. Much of page 2 has: "The Home Guard". Also inside are: "Deserters Caught" & other war-related items, but perhaps the best is about 3 inches headed: Gen. Lee's Official Report concerning the battle of Gettysburg. It references the full & lengthy report which appeared in the Richmond papers of a few days early, but does include an except noting.

Speaking of the final conflict at Gettysburg Gen. Lee says: Our troops succeeded in entering the advanced works of the enemy & getting possession of some of his batteries... The back page includes: "The Raleigh Mobs", "To the Soldiers of North Carolina" and more. Complete in 4 pages, never bound nor trimmed, several folds, some tears & wear at the margins, one causing loss to some words on page 2, some soiling. Great content in a title rarely offered.
