1863 Civil War Letter Confederate 1st SC Captain Seeks Arrest of Deserters
Offered here is an interesting September 1863 Civil War letter written and signed by Joseph Blyth Allston , Captain of Company B, 1st Battalion South Carolina Sharp Shooters , to a Captain Durham in Marion, South Carolina, seeking the arrest of several deserters from his regiment. Allston became well-known for his poem, Stack Arms! Written while a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware. Privates David Jones, James Tanner, Oliver Thomas, Hugh Thomas, Franklin Dees, J. Moore, Samuel Bailey, Macklin Calder, Wm Calder, James Calder, Ervin Hulon, Chas Heart and Deserters from their Company in Marion District. Also Dennis Dorman who has been absent without leave for some three weeks since the expiration of his sick leave. Lists have twice been sent the Commandant of Camp of Instruction and I have been informed their names sent to you. Fearing they may not have reached you I send this by Sergt Glisson.

Capt Co B 1st Batt S. The letter measures about 6 3/4" x 8 1/4". The paper is in very good condition, but with some deterioration along the right margin.
