


These were often used during the American Civil War after the CSA established its own postal service. The Envelope: The rough, brownish paper is characteristic of "adversity covers" used in the South during the later years of the war when high-quality paper became scarce due to the Union blockade. Haywood was a significant town in Chatham County, North Carolina, located at the confluence of the Haw and Deep Rivers.
During the 1860s, it was a busy trade hub and a stop on various stagecoach and postal routes.
