1862 $2 Confederate States of America T-54 PF-11 Note PCGS AU55! Civil War Era

At right is an oval portrait of Judah P. Benjamin (Confederate Attorney General, Secretary of War, and later Secretary of State). Benjamin's portrait on the T-54 is significant: he was one of the Confederacy's most capable (and controversial) leaders, the only Jewish member of the Confederate cabinet. His image symbolized the government's attempt to project stability and legitimacy amid wartime chaos.

The actual printer was the firm Keatinge & Ball (originally Leggett, Keatinge & Ball) of Columbia, South Carolina. Edward Keatinge, an English-born engraver who had worked for the American Bank Note Company in New York, relocated south in August 1861 at Memminger's invitation to help the Confederacy establish domestic currency production. He partnered with lawyer Thomas A.
