1861 Confederate Civil War Letter Sheperdstown Virginia Shot at Winchester KIA Harpers Ferry. This is a great early Confederate Letter from a soldier, Joshua Kidd, at Sheperdstown, Virginia in May of 1861 to Captain Gideon Barnhart in Staunton, Virginia. It is handwritten and says in part. I will give you the number of troops here 7000 men here they consume fail 8500 pounds of fresh beef.
One of our members was shot in Winchester he was not with the company when it took place his name was Mr ames, he was esteemed by the whole company he was in the act of loading of his pistol the ball took effect in his brain and and killed him. A considerable excitement was raised in Harpers Ferry on them the news came that the enemy was in a few miles of Shepperdstown it was then. In the evening the Augusta Regiment was marched to Sheppherdstown we got there. At night but did not have any fight all the regiment went back but us we intend to stay here till we are ordered away. When we got here the ladies of Shepperdstown comes out and met us they ask us to go home with them and take supper with them.
The ladies of this place is as pretty as you eve saw, I walked up street with one of them and she told me that she loved the red shirt menwe live like men now but live like dogs in the ferry.
