1860s CIVIL WAR CDV PHOTOGRAPH OF CONFEDERATE ARMY GENERAL STONEWALL JACKSON

Rare and original, 1860's Civil War CDV Photograph of Confederate General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson in uniform by Mathew Brady.

This striking Photo measures approx. 2 1/8" by 3 1/4" and is mounted on its original, square corner, gold rule border photographer's card mount (overall size of mount is 2 1/2" by 3 7/8"). The back of the mount carries the mark of Mathew Brady's National Photographic Galleries. The Photo features a 1/2 length, slightly retouched version of the 1851 Daguerreotype portrait taken by Mathew Brady of Stonewall Jackson with the uniform of the Kentucky State Guard added by Brady since at the time the Photographer issued this Portrait, it was not known what the uniform of a Confederate Cavalry Officer looked like. This portrait was pirated and further retouched by a number of otther photographers and publishers during the early years of the Civil War but the CDV offered here is the original, Mathew Brady version issued by Brady in the earliest days of the War! This Portrait is often purported to show Jackson as a Confederate general, but it was, in fact a composite using the 1851 Daguerreotype taken by Mathew Brady to which was added a "southern" uniform - actually the uniform of the Kentucky State Guard. At the beginning of the war, the general public both North and South, were eager to see pictures of the new Heroes of the day they read about avidly in the newspapers. Unfortunately, all that was available were dated photos, paintings, and engravings, often from as far back as the Mexican War.

Since at that early date no one knew what a Confederate general's uniform looked like, they either simply pictured the generals in their pre-war U. Army uniforms or copied onto others the unique uniform of Kentucky State Guard commander Simon B. Buckner whose photograph was readily available.

This rare and wonderful, CDV Portrait Photo of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson is in good to very good condition - both the Image and the card mount are clean and very attractive. The Photo itself exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and good tonality but there is a repaired, 1 tear to the Image that enters the photograph at the center of the bottom edge (not affecting the mount). The card mount is clean on the front side and soiled on the reverse.

A very rare and very attractive, 1860's Civil War CDV Photograph of Confederate General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson in uniform by Mathew Brady and a fantastic addition to any collection! Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson (January 21, 1824 May 10, 1863) was a Confederate general during the American Civil War, and probably the most well-known Confederate commander after General Robert E. His military career includes the Valley Campaign of 1862 and his service as a corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Confederate pickets accidentally shot him at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863, which the general survived, albeit with the loss of an arm to amputation.

However, he died of complications of pneumonia eight days later. His death was a severe setback for the Confederacy, affecting not only its military prospects, but also the morale of its army and of the general public. Military historians consider Jackson to be one of the most gifted tactical commanders in United States history. His Valley Campaign and his envelopment of the Union Army right wing at Chancellorsville are studied worldwide even today as examples of innovative and bold leadership.

He excelled as well in other battles: the First Battle of Bull Run (where he received his famous nickname "Stonewall"), the Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg. Jackson was not universally successful as a commander, however, as displayed by his weak and confused efforts during the Seven Days Battles around Richmond in 1862. If you Google the name Thomas J.
