1860's CIVIL WAR STEREOVIEW PHOTO OF CONFEDERATE PRISONERS OF WAR By BRADY
Wonderful and quite rare, 1860's Civil War Stereoview Photograph by Mathew Brady from the series of War Views featuring a very large group of Confederate Prisoners of War captured by Union Troops under General Phil Sheridan at Petersburg, Virginia. The outstanding Photo is titled on the label at the back War Views / Rebel Prisoners on their way to the rear, captured by Gen. Sheridan at Five Forks, April 3rd, 1865. This view was taken April 3rd after the storming of Petersburgh (sic), Va. The Stereoview is from The War For the Union Series taken by Brady Photographers. The Stereoview offered here, was printed from Bradys original negatives and published by E. The Stereoview depicts a large group of Confederate Prisoners, most carrying bedrolls and appearing to be fairly well equipped. The POW's are being guarded by a number of Union Soldiers who appear to be Artillerymen.
Many of the Prisoners have turned to look toward the camera and in the background the tents of a field camp can be seen through the haze. The view is mounted on a rounded corner, flat orange card mount with affixed Anthony label on the back which includes the title of the View and the publisher's slug. This rare Civil War Stereoview Photograph is in very good condition with sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. The Images are generally clean and crisp except for 2 or 3 spots of light staining in the area of the sky in both Photos.
The card mount has some light soiling and minor wear at the corners.
