South Carolina CIVIL War Confederate Charleston Letter
An original letter from Smith at Charleston, Oct 16, 1865 to his friend, George W Folsom in New York , asking his aid in getting a job. He writes that he opposed Secession but as he believed the North was the aggressor, he shouldered his musket with his friends and served for four years, accepted defeat and took the oath and intends to abide by it faithfully. As War has swept away all his property he seek s his friend's aid. 3 pp ink, 8 x 5, w cover bearing a stamp & Charleston postmark. Kershaw's 2nd SC Palmetto Regiment fought at Antietam & Gettysburg.
