Original Civil War Confederate Parole Pass April 10,1865 Appomatox, Va. This Parole Pass is one of 30,000 that were printed by the Union on the night of April 9, 1865.
The Union soldiers worked day and night at the Clover Hill Tavern using hand cranked field presses churning out 4 passes per sheet. These passes allowed the Rebel soldiers to board available trains and steamships on their journey home, and to obtain rations at Union supply depots across the South. The Rebel soldiers were required to take an oath of allegiance to the the United States before receiving their passes. Only 25,587 Confederates surrendered leaving the remaining passes unused. This original Parole Pass is in very good condition with no creases and minimal discoloration. It does have a tiny tear through Regt. This is truly a remarkable piece. The item "Original Civil War Confederate Parole Pass April 10,1865 Appomatox, Va" is in sale since Wednesday, April 22, 2020.
