1 1/2" wide 1 5/16 "tall. The soldiers name was Private Samuel Bowman Shirkey.

This confederate soldier was born Sept on 1. He enlisted in the 1. Virginia cavalry in 1861 and later the 8. Then later on Sept 24. We have researched this solders name, and there is historical information out there on him and his military service beginning with the 10.

We believe this is his authentic ID pin. The tag was likely pinned to his hat with a back pin that is long lost to the ages. Manassas, Antietam, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg & the battle of Appomattox court house, where his regiment surrendered as prisoners of war along with General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9. He was paroled after only 16 days as a POW at New Market Virginia on April 25.

The war was effectively over with Lees surrender, and the Union had no desire to manage & feed the tens of thousands of confederate soldiers, so they were quickly repatriated to move on with their lives. How he managed to survive all those battles and all that carnage no one knows, but he did and lived until 1898. The information we have is that this soldier was a musician before the war.

We dont know if he was a bugler in the (3) different units he was in, however, he did survive at the very least, (6) major battles and lived to tell about it. My research points to where he, later in life as a confederate veteran, moved somewhere in Missouri where he passed in 1898 We are not experts in this area and cannot be certain this item is authentic so we do not guarantee that it is Thanks for looking...
