Confederate Civil War Military Antique Tin Canteen 4.5 Dia. Named & Dated

This is a quite rare style authentic Confederate Civil War tin canteen. I have had this for a while in my collection and as I was photographing it, I realized that there is a very fine engraving scratched into the canteen. What I can read is the date Oct 16? " Above the 1862 is someone's name which looks to start with " Haa and possibly 3 other characters after that which are very hard to read.

I do not see any text on the back side, only on one front. When I first looked at this in the right lighting, I was almost 100% sure that just before the name was the initials " Wm " for William.

You can also see some text that starts with " th ". This text is very hard to see but when you get it in the right light, you can very clearly see the Oct 1862 and some of the other characters. It may take a little time and maybe some different techniques to be able to read the entire thing but it is definitely there and it's period to 1862. Guaranteed not something someone put in recently. You can see some of the wear and oxidation that goes over some of the lines making it hard to read in some areas.

The canteen is 1-3/8" thick with a diameter of 4.75" and slightly rounded on each side. On the right side of the canteen when the side with the text is facing you, you can see where there were probably 2 metal loops attached. I do not see any other areas that would have had attachments for a strap, only 2 at about 1 o'clock and 4 o'clock. The canteen has typical dents and dings with great old patina. I have a feeling that it was painted green at one time and you can still see slight color.

The canteen looks to be very solid and probably would still hold water fine; no holes or cracks. With a little research and time you may be able to figure out the soldier's name. I'm sure there are some other techniques for reading the entire name.

It is definitely there; I just don't have a magnifier that is powerful enough. Please ask if you have any questions. Old antique vintage retro america american adv adv.
