That is less than ideal. The best answer is that books should be stored at lower temperatures -say 40 degrees- and at a steady humidity of 50% year-round. BUT, of course that is unrealistic, and can only be maintained by very wealthy people or libraries. Pragmatically, it is best to follow the rule that, if you are comfortable, chances are your books are comfortable too.

In practice that means to put them on bookshelves (away from grabby hands of toddlers), and keep them preferably dust-free, smoke-free, and not leaning. DO NOT -if you can avoid it- store books in an unheated or overheated garage or attic, nor in a damp or humid basement (moisture encourages mold and mildew growth). It is not unlikey that the recipient of this copy, Dr. Samuel, is the same man who rode with John Hunt Morgan's guerrillas in the Civil War. Samuel practiced medicine at Butlersville, KY after the war. Despite the fact that this book has been reprinted in very recent times, the original copies are scarce and valuable. Your copy is not lovely, and attractive, but with the inscription, it more than makes up for the challenge. I find only three copies of his work available for sale, as an original printing, and none are signed by the author. The expert, Thomas Joyce, is of the opinion that this item IS PROBABLY authentic. I do not know how Bevier autographed his name, but I feel that this inscription is most likely completely correct. After all, Bevier did live in Kentucky after the war, and both men were prominent men in that part of Kentucky, and both were C.

Veterans, so it seems most likely to be corrrect. Items can NEVER be authenticated over the internet but must be seen in-person by an expert in order to verify authenticity.
