ANTIQUE 17.5 Civil War Era Plantation Saddle Restored Confederate Army Irons
This plantation saddle, I believe, dates back to the Civil War. The bottom of the saddle is the old Muslin, wool backing, although completely restored. Remnants of the original Confederate Muslin can be seen in the last photo above. Although the saddle looks, and is, in nice shape, areas where the original hardware once were are clearly visible. I have tried to capture pictures of where little tears occurred around the original brass rivets. I sent this saddle out to have it refurbished, probably should have taken before pictures to show a much more convincing picture of its condition and age. It has cleaned up and conditioned well.

On the bottom of the saddle, the old wool Muslin, circa 1850's thru 1870's, was hard to find, but we did. The outside edge of the base has been bordered with new leather, the original leather binding showing too much wear..

The leather throughout has been conditioned, and is really quite nice for its age, except for the little areas where the location of previous footloops show up as little holes. Some of the leather still shows quite a bit of surface cracking or crazing, particularly the offside fender and the stirrup leathers. The decision was made to leave the original leathers, even though they do show considerable surface cracking, and their safety as stirrup leathers is very questionable.

However, they do add value to the saddle. The stirrups themselves are the old, early 1800's to Civil war, keyhole type.

They have been cleaned and coated with black sometime before I received the saddle. The billets are good, the fenders are as well, with little areas of 100 year wear visible. I do not know exactly how you measure these saddles, but measured as an English saddle it is a 16, although I think that is more likely a 17.5 in plantation saddles.
